It was open sourced in early 2018 and is now being developed by the community.. Since its release in 2010, it has sold over three million copies.

The gameplay consists of a player controlled avatar which can freely roam a "Normal World", or a "Flat World." The player can destroy blocks with a pickaxe, burn certain flammable blocks, Paint blocks, and interact with certain blocks, such as Ladders or Doors, to explore the game.There is no story line in the game and the only objective is to build.
